Ministry of Interior Tells Candlelight Party to Review its Party Statute After Appointing Son Chhay as VP

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Interior, Sar Kheng, has sent a letter to the President of the Candlelight Party, Teav Vannul, with instruction to review and implement the party's statutes kept at the Ministry of Interior and the provisions of the law on political parties, after the party appointed Son Chhay as its new Vice President. This the letter was sent by the Minister of Interior to Teav Vannul on Wednesday, 25 May.

In the letter, DPM Sar Kheng stated that the appointment of Son Chhay as the Vice President of the Party is contrary to Article 20 and Article 33 of the party's statute kept at the Ministry of Interior, and letter No. 579, dated 9th March 2022 of the Ministry of Interior, as well as the provision of Article 26 of the Law on Political Parties.

In a press release dated 1 March 2022, Son Chhay was announced to have joined the Candlelight Party. The next day, on 2 March, the Candlelight Party announced the appointment of Son Chhay as a senior official in liaison with diplomats and national and international organizations for the non-governmental party, and also as Vice President of the Candlelight Party.
